Clostridioides difficile Infection (C. Diff)
Here’s a template you can use for taking notes on C. diff infection:
I. What is C. diff?
A bacterial infection causing diarrhea and inflammation of the colon (colitis).
Often occurs after taking antibiotics, which disrupt gut bacteria balance.
Spores spread through feces and contaminate surfaces, leading to infection.
II. Symptoms:
Diarrhea (watery or bloody)
Abdominal pain/cramping
Fever
Nausea and vomiting
Loss of appetite
Dehydration
III. Risk factors:
Recent antibiotic use
Hospitalization (especially long-term)
Older age
Weakened immune system
Previous C. diff infection
IV. Treatment:
Antibiotics to kill C. diff bacteria
In severe cases: Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) – healthy stool transplant
V. Prevention:
Wash hands thoroughly after using the toilet and changing diapers.
Avoid contact with infected individuals.
Take antibiotics only as prescribed by a doctor.
Discuss C. diff risk with your doctor before starting antibiotics.
